Cinematics and Story in Video Games.

I just read a little article that seemed interesting to me:
“Cinematic Gameplay Experience” Makes My Ass Twitch

The guy has some interesting points, but I think his thinking is a little old-fashioned. The idea that games are meant to be a strictly interactive media is quite plainly false.

I've never really enjoyed the "gameplay" in turn-based RPGs. (Strategy RPGs don't count. THose are fun to me.) Those consist of walking around from battle to battle to story-bit and the battles, in turn, consisted of alternating between hitting attack, using spells, and using potions. Seriously, you just have a menu and you scroll through it to hit attack, magic, or item. YOu don't move, and the strategy is minimal in most cases. Its boring.

SO why does anyone play RPGs? They play for the storyline and, if available, the cutscenes. Xenosaga had some great cut-scenes and the FInal Fantasy series had great plots, but I never finished those games because the gameplay kept on getting in my way. I couldn't put up with the shitty battles and enjoy the game.

In other news, I wnat to dedicate all the text I've written on this web-site to the public domain. I'll write a more thorough version of that, and put some kind of disclaimer somewhere soon.

This doesn't include html because much of that I did not write, and this also does not include images because those are just too easy to exploit. I might Creative Commons those, though.

Well, I'll write that post up in a bit after my psychiatrist appointment, which I may also write about.

QUICKIE EDIT:

THe psychiatrist appointment whent well. They suspect A.D.D. as a possibility for some of my problems, but I wouldn't make any calls yet. Whent pretty well. Also: I bought a new phone. It is chordless, has speed-dial, and Caller ID. Which is a dramatic improvement over my old phone which had only one of those features, "chordlessness."

Also, I think I'm spelling chordless wrong, but I don't feel like checking.

Bow down to my awesome-ness for I am nifty!
